Autumn + Oceanside..
Two weeks ago I headed to work a wedding on the Cape. It was one of those brilliant days where the sky + light are sharp, like the air, and the colors so vivid. The leaves are already dancing and the perfect music is playing for a drive— the kind that feels as warm as the sun through the windshield. I feel nostalgic and peaceful and have such a welcome feeling. For the season and for the future.
I arrive at the private home where I’ll be designing and the wedding will be held and am embraced by my good friend Jen. It’s refreshing to be under her instruction, she pulled this wedding together for her friend and all I had to do was design, it felt nice to focus solely on that aspect, with no pre-production, it was all very spontaneous. We designed and laughed [and probably cried] about our experience in the industry to the sound of the Atlantic Ocean crashing just outside us and worked with the perfect palette of flowers selected by the bride from a local flower farm. When the yellowy light above us in the garage wasn’t strong enough to beat the dark, we retired for the evening.
The next morning we picked up where we left off— did some light foraging for foliage and wild grasses to fill massive urns to be placed around the yard. Might I add that aside from our foraging, the Bride (Stephanie) also stopped for grasses on her way home from rehearsal dinner the previous night, I mean what kind of Bride does that? Incredible. And I’m so happy for her taste for incorporating a bit of wild, because I will never get over the texture and movement of pampas grass, I sincerely hope it’s a trend that never fades.
The ceremony took place in the morning so I had the afternoon off to enjoy my ride home in the sun, happily tired from a whirlwind 15 hours of catching up + designing. My takeaways and advice to you from the weekend: always pack a jacket, a bottle of wine, knife/shears, and waterproof adhesive tape and you can do anything. Also, a little Nick Cave + PJ Harvey while you are working never hurts..
